Developmental Recommendations

Jane you have many fine qualities as a leader. You plan your goals for the future, and listen to and collaborate with others. You create policy and support it with fairness, honesty and kindness.

It seems that there are two areas that are troubling for you. First, I notice that "working" generated more responses in your inventory than any other, and you mention that you have trouble balancing work, family and recreation; work seems to take you over.(8). On the other hand you also say that others can't keep up with you and all the projects that you have planned. You have a lot of energy (6). It seems you wear them out (25). And yet you do wish that you could just let yourself relax, lay in the sun and do nothing at all (36).

It seems that this is the biggest dilemma of your leadership that causes imbalances both at home and at work, where your family, co-workers and yourself are at times adversely affected.

There are several ways to get some good support with this. First, you could get a good coach to help you with balancing your time. As well you may consider your timelines, lengthen them and then get good feedback from your staff and others around you about what they are able to actually accomplish productively and yet still have time to breathe. This feedback may ultimately give you the time you need to spend with your family.

Lastly you might try a mindfulness practice.  Sit quietly and attend to your breath. This should relax you. Soon you will see your mind wander. When it does that, jot a note about what came up and then go right back to concentrating on your breath. Continue this practice for 5 minutes the first day and then lengthen it by 1 minute each day until you are mindful for 15 minutes. After several weeks you can review your notes and you may find some underlying pattern that is driving your behavior which you can then work on (are you seeking appreciation? Are you worried that you will be criticized? Are you passionate about what you are doing? If you spend a few minutes a day in this mindfulness practice you may find that you will pinpoint some underlying motivations that you didn't know were there. Then you can know what kinds of habits of mind that would be healthy for you to work on.
